Back pain (also known "dorsalgia") is pain felt in the back that may originate from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine.
The pain may have a sudden onset or it can be a chronic pain, it can be felt constantly or intermittently, stay in one place or refer or radiate to other areas. It may be a dull ache, or a sharp or piercing or burning sensation. The pain may be felt in the neck (and might radiate into the arm and hand), in the upper back, or in the low back, (and might radiate into the leg or foot), and may include symptoms other than pain, such as weakness, numbness or tingling.
Back pain is one of humanity's most frequent complaints. In the U.S., acute low back pain (also called lumbago) is the fifth most common reason for all physician visits. About nine out of ten adults experience back pain at some point in their life, and five out of ten working adults have back pain every year.

How Important Are Everyday Products in the Quest For Posture Correction?

"Let us not waste valuable time, thought or intervention in designing furniture, if by a small expenditure for these three gifts May we train the child to win their own conscious control, and likely to rise over all restriction imposed by normal school assemblies. "

- FMAlexander, Man's Supreme Inheritance (London: Dutton, 1918)

The Alexander Technique has helped countless thousands to overcome back pain by a method of posture correction. However, its founders believe that the design of the furniture was not as important as its technology.

The above quotation was probably in response to the Alexander people ask for his opinion on the best furniture for schoolchildren. While I see his mind, I would say that it goes further than today, when he said this in 1918.

The typical car seat is a perfect example of a shockingly bad example, but Alexander is not likely to foresee. The problem with the design is that the slopes to the back seat, so the gravity is indeed pressure on the body in the back of the chair. The curvature of the back of the seat thus forms the spine in the same form every day. Despite much research into the design of car seats, I can not help but feel that they miss the forest for the trees.

Any static function for hours and hours should be unhealthy in my opinion. To even worse, the lumbar curvature of the most car seats are not taken into account that the spine flat, if the pelvis rolls backward. As the basin is not supported by a backward-sloping seat, it is totally inappropriate, then forcing lumbar curve with a backrest.

Alexander had a point when he quote, but I suspect that if he is still around today he would be pushing very strongly for the labor practices, which are much less about the meeting for the clock at the end.
